Joki is 5'11 and has dyed blue hair and brown eyes. His hair was later revealed to be naturally brown. His skin tone is quite pale. In addition, he appears to be quite thin and slightly toned. His skin also appears to be clear, but that could just be due to the art style.

On Page 17, Joki is shown removing his hospital gown. On his right shoulder is either a birthmark that is the same shape as the sparkles next to Joki in the .gif to the right. It has an unknown significance behind it, as stated here.

Personality[]

"Joki is soft-spoken and reserved. He can be a little awkward and can throw you off with his dry humor. He's sensitive and takes everything at heart even if he pretends otherwise.” - cast page.

Joki appears to be a very reserved individual who does not trust people easily. However, when he cares about someone, he shows a much softer side, such as in the scenes with Russu or his mother.

Despite his solitary disposition, he seems to be somewhat gullible. For instance, Joki quickly believed Ace after he explained Aisho to him, only questioning his honesty once he began to behave strangely.

In addition, Joki can be quite impulsive at times, such as when he stabs Ace or becomes distracted by food at the super market.

In the past, he seemed to be more social and easygoing than he is now. In the Homesick animation, for example, a younger Joki can be seen enjoying himself at parties with a large group of friends. Plus, during a stream on 5/16/21, Niko, the author, mentioned that Joki used to enjoy impressing others when he was in high school, resulting in him showing off quite often. It is implied that his personality is different from then, which could be symbolized by his change in hair color.

Joki waking up.

Biography[]

Joki's full name is Joki Bedrieger. He is of Finnish and Dutch descent.

He had been living with his mother in northern California until the world was supposedly destroyed and Aisho city was created. After waking up in Aisho, it appears that Joki seemed to have forgotten the events that occurred right before he ended up in a hospital in Aisho city.

Joki wakes up in a hospital bed and finds himself surrounded by alien-like nurses. He also notices that some information about him, such as his height and age, were recorded. He gets into his clothes, which were wet for an unknown reason, and starts to walk around the hospital, trying to figure out where he is. He confronts another animated at the front desk, who tells him that he had fainted due to a drop in blood pressure. The animated tells Joki to leave because they no longer have any responsibility of him. Confused, he looks around the hospital, expecting to see the animated nurses that had been behind him; however, they have mysteriously disappeared. He leaves the building and is yet again confused by the inhuman beings within the city. Unable to explain what he is seeing, he convinces himself that he was given hallucinogens by the nurses at the hospital. He is suddenly confronted by a giant goldfish with visible skulls in its translucent body. He is almost attacked by it until he is saved by Ace, who shoots the goldfish. Ace collects a card that the goldfish dropped and matter-of-factly tells Joki that the world ended. Ace then pulls him towards his van.

In Ace's van, Joki starts to angrily demand answers and even accuses Ace of drugging him, but Ace manages to quiet Joki down. The two end up learning each others' names, and Ace shows Joki a book about Aisho that tells the reader about the city and the animated living within it. He tells Joki that in order to leave the dangerous Aisho city, they must reach “The Garden.” However, this can only be done by defeating the queen animated that rule over each district in Aisho city. Ace then jokingly points a gun at Joki’s head, which frightens him and makes him even more anxious. Just when Ace is about to drive off, Joki takes a knife from the wall of the van and tells him to pull over. He ends up stabbing Ace in the stomach, dragging him outside, and driving to a nearby store.

In the store, Joki quickly becomes distracted once he spots all of the food they have for sale. After stealing some food, he comes across TV screens and magazines depicting the animated in the city. He comments that the city seems more like a tourist trap than an apocalypse, which seems like a nightmare to him. In one particular page of a magazine, he sees an adoption ad and becomes saddened because he is reminded of his own mother. As he looks at the ad, a grenade is suddenly thrown at his direction, injuring him. The people who threw the grenade were Ace and Jack.

The pair accuse Joki of being an animated and carry him to the van, where they tie him up. They then drive to "The Well,” with the intention to summon Andromeda (the first queen animated that they must defeat). Joki tries to convince them that he is human, but Jack and Ace do not believe him. He is thrown into the well where he is met by Andromeda, the queen animated of District Lotus. Jack and Ace are thrilled, as they had tried to attract Andromeda several times in the past, but failed every time. Suddenly, however, Andromeda exclaims that she has found a human, which shocks Ace and Jack. Joki is pulled down the well by Andromeda.

Joki is dreaming. One scene is a childhood memory with his mother on the beach. In this memory, he was looking for a starfish on the shore, but was unsuccessful, so his mother secretly took a white, store-bought starfish from her bag and placed it on the rocks. After finding it, Joki made a wish: to be able to make everyone happy and to rid his mother of her “bad thoughts”. His mother began crying, exclaiming that Joki shouldn’t have to endure anything for her. Joki is worried by his mother’s behavior and insists that they should call his father. His mother refuses this offer, claiming that everything was fine, and embraces Joki. However, her state only worsens, as she begins to repeat phrases that she had already said previously.

Suddenly, Joki’s mother disappears, dropping her purse, as well as the bottles of medicine inside of it. In her place, a white bathtub full of blue flowers appears. Inside is Meri and current-day Joki. When he spots her, Joki asks Meri if they know each other, as she looks very familiar. They are also both aware of each other’s full names. He then wakes up in Andromeda's chamber, and Andromeda tries to get Joki to talk, but he is unable to do so because he is still in a dream-like trance. He slips back into the dream with Meri in it. Meri then tells Joki that he is losing his sense of reality; however, she also tells him that his mother is still alive, and that there is a way to get back home. Joki is intrigued, but Meri moves on and starts talking to him about how she knows everything about him - every emotion, memory, and desire that he has ever felt. Joki hazily tries to deny that Meri knows all these things about him. Suddenly, Joki slips into a different dream - he is in an empty bathtub with a pink-haired girl named Russu. Although the two exchange words about how they've missed each other and are seemingly close to each other, Russu starts to act hostile towards Joki. Joki had somehow broken her heart while they knew each other, and she starts to call him "fake" and that she would never miss him after what he had done to her, even telling him that she never wanted to see his face again.

Joki is in pain from Meri's manifestation of his emotions.

Joki is then shown drowning in a river and starts talking to Meri. He appears to be distressed by the memories and sarcastically quips that Meri’s comprehensive knowledge about his personal life is “fantastic.” Meri tells Joki that, if he wants to make things right again, he must make his way out of Aisho. Although Joki is skeptical, he agrees that he wants to find his way back home. Yet again, Joki is sent back to his past. He watches himself go through events of his life before, such as his childhood friendship with Russu, his mother comforting him as a child, and things that happened to him as a teen. Re-experiencing these memories gives Joki the motivation to try to escape the Well.

When the flashbacks end, Joki is shown struggling to make his way out of the thick locks of hair that Andromeda has tied around his body. While he is still suspended in the air, Andromeda’s maw bites off his head and dumps his body into the pool of liquid below. Andromeda gently takes his head from her jellyfish’s jaws and briefly smiles before dropping it into the pool as well.

While Andromeda is outside of the well, we see a disembodied hand emerging from Joki’s profile card, which has expanded. The hand pulls Joki’s body out of the pool of liquid and into the card. Suddenly, the hand re-emerges, this time attached to a body. The body stumbles towards the pool of liquid and pulls out Joki’s head. Finally, the body connects Joki’s head to its neck, which beams with colorful lights. Thus, Joker Joki is born.

Joker Joki opens his eyes and enters Andromeda’s portal. When Andromeda notices him, she attempts to smash him with her creature. He dodges the attack and throws a string of banners at her. Somehow, the banners end up around her body, trapping her. Joker Joki then grabs her and throws her through the portal. Andromeda’s back hits the wall, toppling several of her portraits to the floor. Joker Joki smirks at her before pulling a glowing card out of his floating profile card, which is now empty. The new weapon card depicts a spiked club.

Joker Joki’s eyes begin to flash. Although his irises remain red, his sclera alternates from yellow to blue. Andromeda’s eyes begin to mimic this pattern as she becomes seemingly entranced by it. As vivid colors begin to surround them, Joker Joki extends his hand towards her. Without hesitation, she takes his hand, and the two begin to dance. As they dance, shadows of other Joker Jokis — manifestations of Joker Joki’s hypnosis — surround them. The real Joker Joki places his hand over Andromeda’s eyes. When he removes his hand, Andromeda sees four of her former assistants. including Satura. Like Andromeda, their eyes are flashing, signifying that they are merely illusions. For a brief moment, they are shown celebrating Andromeda’s return, and a smiling Joker Joki even hands her a cake.

While Andromeda is distracted by the joy of reuniting with her friends, Joker Joki pulls out the spiked club from the card he had previously made. Andromeda, sensing his presence, turns around. When she sees Joker Joki holding the club over her head, her eyes return to normal and she becomes visibly frightened. Joker Joki strikes her in the head with his weapon and bows, as if part of a performance. As Andromeda bleeds profusely on the floor, Joker Joki lets out a chilling laugh.

All of a sudden, his laugh begins to die down as he falls to the floor, visibly exhausted by his show of power. He feels a shock of pain, and his eyes flash once more as he claws at his neck and vomits a vibrant swirl of colors. Joker Joki begins to glow white before transforming back into his regular, human self.

As Joki falls to the floor, both his card and his club also begin to radiate white light. Andromeda reaches out to him before she is grabbed by Jack, who kills her with a single punch. She drops a Queen card.

Relationships[]

Nurse Secretary[]

Joki and the Nurse Secretary had a brief conversation in the hospital's main room. She/it tells Joki that his reason for being in the hospital is because he fainted. The Nurse Secretary says that the cause of fainting was most likely a blood pressure drop, or by a small mild mental illness (aka "mental indisposition"). Joki then asks about the Nurses' "costumes", which seems to offend the Nurse Secretary. She says that "this is a serious hospital", before urging Joki to go home and never come back.

Ace[]

Ace was the first human who Joki met in Aisho. After Joki escaped from the hospital, Ace saved him from the giant skull goldfish and explained what had occurred while Joki was asleep.

Initially, Ace was excited to introduce Joki to the rest of the group. However, after Joki stabbed him, Ace began to view him as untrustworthy and dangerous. After Andromeda revealed that Joki was human, Ace refused to save him from the Well.

Currently, the two strongly dislike each other.

Jack[]

Initially, Jack believed Joki to be an animated, according to Ace’s explanation of the events that had occurred after he had found him. However, after Andromeda revealed that Joki was human, Jack decided to risk himself to save him, as he felt responsible for their idea to throw him down the well.

Joki's Mother[]

Joki and his mother seem to care about each other very much. The two had been living together until he was transported to Aisho.

Russu[]

Joki and Russu were childhood friends who later become romantically involved. The pair trusted each other deeply and seemed to be very close. However, sometime before the events of Aisho, Joki did something to betray Russu’s trust, thus ending their connection.

Although Joki wishes to amend their relationship, Russu seems unwilling to forgive Joki. As a result, Joki is haunted by the mistakes he made in the past.
